5 Legitimate Woods Accessible By The MBTA Subway From Boston

Recently a Boston Outdoor School participant showed up to one of our morning walks in the Middlesex Fells after having walked for 1.5 hours from Malden Center T-Stop. This isn’t practical for most. In my pursuit of encouraging people to go outside I realize a major limiting factor is our ability to access the outdoors without a vehicle.

Below is a list of T-accessible woods.

1. The Middlesex Fells

A 7 minute walk from Oak Grove T Stop. By far the largest and most diverse off all of the options on this list, the Middlesex Fells would require years of exploring to see all that it has to offer.

4. Hammond Pond Reservation

A 4 minute walk from the Chestnut Ave T-Stop. Once you are on Hammond St you will cross the bridge over the train tracks. Take your first right onto Longwood Rd. Follow Longwood Rd. almost to the end. Once you begin to feel like you’re on someones property ditch off into the woods on the right and follow along the train track fence. You are now on public property and are entering Hammond Pond Reservation.

5. Arnold Arboretum

A 3 minute walk from Forest Hills T Stop. You have to work hard to find little sections of woods but it’s possible. If you are feeling energetic go all the way through the Arboretum to the Allandale woods.
